Russia is developing unconventional aircraft designs. One of them is a helicopter that can turn into an airplane in flight. This was told in an interview with Izvestia by Sergei Chernyshev, scientific director of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute, vice-president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"The apparatus is equipped with a main propeller, which in certain flight modes is fixed and becomes just a wing. At the same time, the pusher engines continue to work, and the aircraft flies like an airplane. That is, the machine combines the advantages of vertical takeoff (as in helicopters) and high speed of movement horizontally, which provides an airplane layout," - said the scientist.

He added that the development is protected by a Russian patent. Nevertheless, after the idea's workability is confirmed, there is a long way to go to create working technologies.
