- Retired U.S. colonel names reason for possible mobilization of 18-year-olds in Ukraine
Washington realizes that it can no longer provide assistance to Ukraine. Retired US Army Colonel Douglas McGregor said this on January 23 in the social network X (former Twitter).
"I think there is now a realization that we can't give Ukraine anything more, and I think that's why the country's authorities are unfortunately trying to draft 18-year-olds into the army," he wrote.
McGregor also noted that this is the reason why peace needs to be made in Ukraine.
Earlier, on January 21, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired May 20, 2024) told journalists at the World Economic Forum that if Kiev is not accepted into NATO, European countries will have to finance the maintenance of the Ukrainian army, the number of which is planned to increase to 1 million people.
On that day, Irish journalist Chay Bose said that Zelensky should not forget about the assistance provided to Ukraine by Western countries, while all he does is talk about needing new grants.
On January 20, Zelensky also said that Trump should resolve the conflict in Ukraine not only quickly but also reliably. He also added that Europe is behind in developments. He pointed out that European countries are no longer leading in the "global technology race" and are now behind the US and China.
On the same day, political scientist Ivan Mezyukho suggested in a conversation with Izvestia that relations between the US and European NATO member states could become cooler due to the fact that Trump may change Washington's political line on Ukraine. In particular, the new U.S. president demands from the alliance allies more independence and increased investments in assistance to Ukraine.
