Storm is coming to Earth: magnetic storm on January 23 - forecast, recommendations for meteorologists
A small magnetic storm is expected on Thursday, January 23. According to scientists, the cosmic storm will start this afternoon and reach its peak by Friday. The natural phenomenon may affect the well-being of weather-dependent people, causing headaches, insomnia, dizziness and other unpleasant symptoms. When the nearest magnetic storm will come and how to protect themselves from its negative impact meteosensitive people - tell "Izvestia".
Magnetic storm on January 23: whether it will come today
Geomagnetic storm is a perturbation in the Earth's magnetic field, caused by the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetosphere of our planet. These fluctuations directly depend on space weather - changes caused by solar flares.
According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of IKI and ISSP RAS, the nearest magnetic storm may occur today. On January 23, the geomagnetic background is expected to be calm, but the probability of perceptible magnetic storms remains at 7%. Occurrence of small perturbations of the Earth's magnetic field may occur with a probability of 15%.
According to scientists, magnetic storms can last from a few hours to several days. Strengthening of the geomagnetic storm may come on Friday, January 24. This is due to a powerful flare that occurred on the Sun on January 22. Because of this phenomenon tomorrow Earth may catch up with more powerful magnetic storms of the G2 level, reports IKI and ISZF RAS.
How to determine the strength of the magnetic storm on January 23
The power of magnetic is measured by different indices. Scientists use more complex measurement systems, deciphering which requires special qualifications. Ordinary people are most often guided by the five-point index G, where each of the levels corresponds to a certain intensity of the magnetic storm:
G1 - weak magnetic storms, which practically do not affect people and technical devices;
G2 - moderate geomagnetic storms that can lead to the appearance of northern (or polar) lights, as well as cause voltage fluctuations in power grids;
G3 - severe storm causing disruptions to satellite navigation and power systems;
G4 - very strong storms that provoke power surges in power systems, impairing satellite navigation;
G5 - an extremely strong storm that can destroy power systems and cause severe damage to transformers, as well as significantly degrade the accuracy of satellite navigation instruments.
On January 23, 2025, a G1 magnetic storm is expected for all days. This means that the geomagnetic situation will remain relatively calm and will not bring unpleasant sensations to people who are meteorologically dependent.
How magnetic storms affect health
Magnetic storms can have a detrimental effect not only on the operation of machinery, but also on the human body. Many people with chronic diseases and hypersensitivity to weather changes feel worse during geomagnetic storms. Those who are meteorologically dependent most often experience the following symptoms:
- headaches and dizziness;
- sleep disturbance, drowsiness;
- increased fatigue;
- joint pain;
- fluctuations in blood pressure;
- exacerbation of chronic diseases.
Each person tolerates the impact of magnetic storms differently. According to researchers, geostorms of low and medium intensity, up to the level of G3, do not significantly affect the well-being of most people.
How to protect yourself from magnetic storms
According to doctors, magnetic storms do not pose a serious threat to human health. However, if a meteorologist periodically feels sick during magnetic storms, experts recommend following rules that can help alleviate unpleasant sensations. Experts advise:
-reduce stress and relax the body with the help of quiet rest or meditation;
-stick to a healthy diet, eating more vegetables, fruits and other foods rich in magnesium and potassium. This will help keep your cardiovascular system functioning properly;
-Ensure quality sleep. This will help the body better cope with the effects of magnetic storms;
-avoid excessive physical exertion, which during this period can adversely affect the heart;
-limit the consumption of alcohol and caffeine, replacing them with water.
On this day it is important to show increased attention to your body. In case of severe deterioration of well-being, it is recommended to consult a medical specialist.
