Uzbekistan proposes to reduce prison sentences for reading books
A draft law being discussed in Uzbekistan envisages a reduction in the time served in penal colonies for convicts who read books from an approved list. Uz News reported January 22.
According to the initiative, for reading one book and passing an exam on it, the period of time not served will be reduced by three days, while convicts will be able to use it no more than 10 times a year.
"In penal institutions it is envisaged to involve convicts in reading. For convicts for reading one book from the approved list and passing the established exam, the period of the un-served part of the sentence will be reduced by three days," Uzbek parliament deputy Bakhodir Mamatkhanov said.
Earlier, on October 23, 2024, the republic's Interior Ministry said that adult residents of Uzbekistan who are fond of the quadrobbing movement may be prosecuted for petty hooliganism.
