Japan held a protest in response to sexual assault by a U.S. soldier
Okinawan women in Japan are holding a protest in response to an incident of sexual assault by a U.S. soldier. This was reported by NHK on January 23.
It is specified that a U.S. Marine Corps soldier was referred to prosecutors this month on suspicion of sexually assaulting and injuring a woman, after which prefectural women's groups held a protest in the city of Naha on Jan. 22.
The rally was made up of about 250 people who gathered in the square in front of the prefectural government building.
"The U.S. military has a duty to control its soldiers to prevent them from committing violent crimes against civilians. We demand effective measures," the rally chanted.
The participants lined up along the sidewalk and held placards that read "We will never tolerate repeated attacks by US soldiers."
Earlier, on January 20, 2023, more than a thousand rotten apples were put outside Scotland Yard to protest violence. In front of the police building, 1,071 rotten apples were put up - based on the number of law enforcement officers who have been or are being investigated for violence against women and girls. A board was placed next to the apples with the caption, "1,071 bad apples. How many more?".
