- Director Kusturica expressed hope for the preservation of traditional values in Serbia
Film director Emir Kusturica expressed hope that Serbia, like the United States, will soon become a country of women and men. He said this on January 22 at the opening of the 18th International Film Festival "Kustendorf" in the Serbian town of Drvengrad.
On that day, the director was given a special award in the form of a red egg, which in Christianity symbolizes life.
"Here comes the 18th birthday. Together with US President Donald Trump we have stated that it is better to be healthy than sick, he has consolidated that America from yesterday is a country of men and women, and I hope that Serbia will also soon become a country of women and men," Kusturica said at the opening of the festival, adding that this might be the last festival he opened.
Kusturica recalled that since the middle of the 20th century, especially since the 1970s, the authority of artists began to fall in the world and especially in Serbia.
"The unstoppable process of losing authority is not caused by someone's will, but by global processes.<...> The issue of the authority of art and the artist, which was honored until the middle of the 20th century, is declining under the influence of money," he informed.
However, the director expressed hope that Serbian culture can still regain its former authority.
Earlier, on November 24, 2024, in a conversation with "Izvestia" Kusturica spoke about the problems of modern cinematography. The director called the key to the development of Russian cinema the cessation of attempts to imitate Hollywood. It is the search for what is truly a "Russian movie" that will help the industry in the country.
On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Serbian actor and director Emir Kusturica on his 70th birthday, noting his active public position. The President wished him health, inspiration and success.
November 13, Kusturica predicted the film based on "Crime and Punishment" the status of his best work. According to the filmmaker, Dostoevsky is still relevant because "everything has changed so much now." Kusturica is going to demonstrate the writer's philosophy through the prism of modern life.
