- Media reported on the inability of the US to meet the AFU's demand for howitzer barrels
TheUSA cannot meet the demand of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) for barrels for 155-mm long-range howitzers M777. This was reported by The Time Zone portal on January 22 with reference to the Pentagon's budget document.
"Only one arsenal owned and operated by the U.S. government produces the barrels, and that facility is currently unable to meet the requirement to produce more than 30 new units per month," the material said.
It is specified that in response to Ukraine's "unprecedented demand," the US Army is going to create another source of production. According to the Pentagon document, this is an "extraordinary budgetary requirement" from the Ukrainian side, to which the US Congress is paying special attention.
According to the portal, the U.S. authorities have allocated $161 million from a special fund to support Ukraine for the second production facility, Gazeta.Ru specifies.
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump said that Washington is studying the issue of further arms supplies to Kiev. He also noted that his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin will take place "in the very near future".
After his inauguration on Jan. 20, Trump called on NATO to increase spending on Ukraine. He noted that the United States has spent $200 billion more on Ukraine than other countries in the alliance, although the conflict affects European countries much more. He said the North Atlantic alliance needs to allocate more funds to "even the score."
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine amid Russia's special operation to protect Donbass, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
