US President Donald Trump's statement that Washington is studying the issue of further arms deliveries to Kiev is a message to the Ukrainian side that if Ukraine does not meet the US leader's initiatives, the USA may well reconsider its policy, political scientist and expert of the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation Denys Denisov has said. He told Izvestia on January 22.

"So far, we cannot talk about a radical change in the U.S. position, including on this issue, based on the fact that there are no specific decisions. I have a feeling that such a message emerged based on Trump's general rhetoric on the conflict in Ukraine, namely the desire to settle it. This message is sent to official Kiev in order to demonstrate that in case Kiev does not meet the initiatives of Trump and the US, the US may well reconsider its policy regarding arms supplies and financing of the Kiev regime," Denisov explained.

According to him, any message related to the conflict affects, and should be evaluated by, all parties involved in it.

"For Russia, [this message] means that in case the [possible] negotiation process is disrupted for one reason or another, and it will be the fault of the Russian Federation rather than the Kiev regime for the US, Trump may well, as many analysts say, intensify support for Ukraine in such a way that support from [previous US President Joe] Biden and his administration will seem like flowers," the political analyst concluded.

Earlier, on January 9, Reuters quoted an anonymous US official as saying that the United States had transferred ATACMS ballistic missiles, Abrams tanks and F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, but none of this had helped Kiev turn the situation in the war zone in its favor.

The official said that the administration of former President Biden wanted to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position for the start of possible negotiations and therefore transferred a large number of weapons to it. Sanctions were also imposed on Russia, but all this did not help improve the Ukrainian side's position on the battlefield.

Western countries stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine against the backdrop of Russia's special operation to protect Donbass, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
