In India, a train fatally struck 11 people who got off another train
11 passengers of the Pushpak Express train died after getting off the train due to a fire threat and falling under the wheels of the Karnataka Express train, in the state of Maharashtra in western India. This was reported by local news agency ANI on January 22.
"According to the latest reports, 11 people were killed in the accident. Police and other officials are at the spot, <...> eight ambulances and several railway rescue vans have been dispatched," Nashik district commissioner Praveen Gedam told the agency.
Superintendent of Police Maheshwar Reddy told ANI that six people were injured in the incident, they are receiving medical treatment and their lives are not in danger.
Dilip Kumar, executive director of information and publicity department of the Railway Board, explained while talking to the agency that someone pulled the fire alarm chain in Pushpak Express and then people got off the train and according to one version, they tried to cross the tracks on which the Karnataka Express was traveling. According to the second version, the passengers were standing on the tracks.
ANI added that the relatives of all the victims will be paid compensation.
Earlier, on January 15, two people were killed and six injured when two freight trains collided near the Bulgarian capital Sofia. Four ambulance crews, police and five fire brigades worked at the scene of the accident. Because of the incident, train traffic had to be stopped in one of Sofia's districts.
