- Britain has spoken out against Trump's plans for a speedy end to the conflict in Ukraine
British officers have spoken out against US President Donald Trump's plans for a speedy settlement of the conflict in Ukraine because it will allegedly give Russia a chance to build up its military power. This was reported by The Times newspaper on January 22 with reference to high-ranking British military officers.
"High-ranking officers in the Ministry of Defense believe that as soon as Trump signs a peace deal, a race between Russia and the West will begin to train their armies," the material noted.
Also, according to British Lt. Gen. Ralph Wooddiss, who heads NATO's Rapid Reaction Corps, the Russian side could be much more successful in the "likely next conflict."
In addition, NATO members noted Ukraine's declining position for peace talks. According to the newspaper, concluding a ceasefire would result in Kiev losing territory.
Earlier in the day, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that Trump instructed his special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg to resolve the Ukrainian conflict in 100 days.
Before that, on January 21, the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called ending the conflict in Ukraine Trump's priority. According to him, "part of the preparatory work" has begun. He, among other things, specified that both sides of the conflict should be ready for compromise.
At the same time, after the inauguration, which took place on January 20, US President Donald Trump called on NATO to increase spending on Ukraine. He noted that the US has spent $200 billion more on Ukraine than other countries of the alliance, although the conflict affects European countries much more. According to him, the North Atlantic alliance needs to allocate more funds to "even the score".
