The European Union (EU) has no "plan B" on the issue of extending sanctions against Russia if Hungary refuses to support the restrictions. This was reported by Bloomberg news agency on January 22, citing sources in diplomatic circles.

"Several diplomats said that there is currently no 'plan B' for extending sanctions if [Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor] Orban continues to block them," follows from the material.

It is noted that in the coming days, EU ambassadors are going to hold a meeting on the issue of extending sanctions against Russia. One of the sources added that in the absence of agreement, the issue will be referred to the foreign ministers, who will meet in Brussels on January 27.

On the eve, Orban called on the EU to review the policy of sanctions against Russia. According to him, the restrictions have only achieved the destruction of the competitiveness of the European economy.

US President Donald Trump, in turn, allowed the preservation of the regime of anti-Russian sanctions until the very end of the conflict in Ukraine.

The Hungarian Prime Minister said on January 17 that a new era would begin with Trump's accession to power. He noted that the sanctions that were imposed by the European Union against Russia, it is time to cancel. In his opinion, upon Trump's return to the White House, the EU will have to adapt to the new era and establish sanctions-free relations with Russia.

Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
