- Gas reserves in storage in Latvia, Hungary and the Czech Republic have fallen below 60%
Gas reserves in storage facilities in Latvia, Hungary and the Czech Republic have fallen below 60 percent amid the cessation of Russian gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine. This was reported by TASS on January 22, citing data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE).
It is reported that in the Czech Republic gas reserves have fallen to 56.63% and there are 2.5 billion cubic meters. Hungary's reserves are filled to 59.73%, they contain about 3.9 billion cubic meters of gas, and in Latvia the reserves have fallen to 58.83%, they contain 1.4 billion cubic meters.
The largest gas reserves in Europe are now in Portugal, Sweden, Spain and Poland.
Earlier, on January 10, gas reserves in UK storage facilities dropped to a low level amid the cessation of Russian gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine and a colder than usual winter. It was specified that British storage facilities are 26% below last year's reserves. They remain about half full.
From January 1, 2025 Gazprom stopped fuel supplies to Europe via Ukraine. The company said that this happened due to the repeated and clearly expressed refusal of the Ukrainian side to prolong these agreements.
Back in August last year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (his term of office expired in May 2024) said that Kiev would not extend the gas transit agreement with Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out that Moscow was not giving up gas supplies through Ukrainian territory.
