Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on January 21 called on the EU to reconsider the policy of sanctions against Russia.

"It's time to talk about sanctions! <...> It's time for a change!" - he wrote on the X network (formerly Twitter).

Orban also pointed out that sanctions have failed to end the armed conflict, paralyze the economy, or find Europe a replacement for Russian energy from other available sources.

"The sanctions designed by Brussels bureaucrats have achieved one thing: they have destroyed the competitiveness of the European economy," he concluded.

On this day, US President Donald Trump allowed the preservation of the anti-Russian sanctions regime until the very end of the conflict in Ukraine. He has already informed that he intends to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as possible.

Orban said on January 17 that a new era will begin with Trump coming to power. He noted that it is time to lift the sanctions that were imposed by the European Union against Russia, RT reports. In his opinion, the EU will have to adapt to the new era when Trump returns to the White House, as well as establish sanctions-free relations with Russia.

Earlier, on January 10, American political scientist Malek Dudakov said that Trump may lift some of the anti-Russian sanctions in case of successful negotiations with Moscow. According to the expert, if certain agreements are reached, Trump may also return some Russian assets.

At the same time, the British newspaper Financial Times reported that the European Union is worried that Trump, after taking office, may lift the anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the current president of the United States.

Western countries increased sanctions pressure on Russia after the start of the special operation to protect civilians in Donbass, which was announced on February 24, 2022.
