A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Turkey
An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.0 was recorded off the coast of Turkey. This was reported on Tuesday, December 21, in the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center(EMSC).
According to their data, the focus of tremors lay at a depth of 10 km and 135 km west-northwest of the city of Manisa, which is home to at least 243 thousand people.
There is no information about casualties or destruction.
Before that, on January 16, the probability of a powerful earthquake with magnitude 8-9 in the Nankai fault, located to the south-east of the Japanese island of Honshu, rose to 80%. It is specified that the probability of occurrence is calculated for the next 30 years. Victims of natural phenomenon may become up to 323 thousand local residents.
Earlier, on September 2, 2024, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 was recorded off the coast of Taiwan. Thus, the tremors, the epicenter of which was located 8.5 km southeast of Hualian County, registered at 16:26 (11:26 Moscow time). The origin was at a depth of 23.9 km.
