US President Donald Trump has admitted the introduction of new sanctions against Russia if the Russian authorities fail to negotiate a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. This was reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP) on January 21.

"It looks like it," Trump said to reporters at the White House when asked if the United States would impose additional sanctions on Moscow if President Vladimir Putin does not agree to negotiations.

Also on January 21, Trump allowed the anti-Russian sanctions regime to remain in place until the very end of the conflict in Ukraine.

On that day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS that the preparation of a telephone conversation between Putin and Trump is not yet underway.

On the eve of the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called the end of the conflict in Ukraine a priority for Trump. According to him, "part of the preparatory work" has begun. He also specified that both sides of the conflict should be ready to compromise.

Western countries have tightened sanctions pressure on Russia in connection with the special operation to protect Donbass. The decision to launch it was announced on February 24, 2022 after the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
