A drone expert pointed out the fundamental difference between KUB-2-E and KUB
The KUB-2-E drone is a fundamentally new solution that differs from the first-generation drones of this model. The key feature is a different shape of the hull, which enhances the drone's technical characteristics. This was stated by Maxim Kondratyev, the founder of the training center for unmanned aviation, corresponding member of the Russian Engineering Academy, in a conversation with Izvestia on January 21.
The Kalashnikov Concern JSC together with the Izhevsk Unmanned Systems Research and Production Association (NPO IzhBS, Kalashnikov Concern) developed the KUB-2-E, the concern's press service reported in its Telegram channel earlier in the day. The KUB-2-E small- and medium-class guided barrage munitions will be presented for the first time at the IDEX 2025 international exhibition of weapons and defense technologies, which will be held from February 17 to 21 in Abu Dhabi (UAE).
"The first KUB was externally similar to the Geranium - it had a sweeping wing shape. It had two half-wings, respectively, in the "KUB-2-E" applied a fundamentally different design of the airframe of the unmanned system, there are already four half-wings. As far as I understand, judging by its external data, it is built on a more efficient aerodynamic scheme to increase its time in the air, the range of application and the level of maneuverability", - explained Kondratiev.
In addition, he suggested that the new drone uses serious navigation systems and communication and telemetry channels that are more resistant to electronic warfare (EW). Among other things, based on the external data of the apparatus, it is obvious that a more advanced optoelectronic system is used on board the KUB-2-E. The publication's interlocutor also added that the letter E in the drone's name means that it is intended for export. However, he suggested that a version of the KUB-2 has also been developed, which could be used by the Russian military.
Before that, on January 10, Denis Fedutinov, editor-in-chief of the specialized publication "Unmanned Aviation" and RSMD expert, also told Izvestia that the upgraded drones will have increased flight duration and range. He added that the modernization also focused on the strike properties of the Cub by increasing its payload capacity and the potential to add to the list of possible combat units to be deployed on it.
A day earlier, Newsweek reported that Russia's modernized KUB drones could become a real "nightmare " for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). Now, the publication reports that the modernized warhead turns the UAVs into a "more formidable nightmare for the enemy" by making them from an explosive that is 1.7 times more powerful than TNT.
The special operation to defend Donbass, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, is still ongoing. The decision to carry it out was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
