Snowden's wife has applied for Russian citizenship
The wife of ex-employee of the US National Security Agency (NSA) Edward Snowden Lindsay Mills has applied for Russian citizenship. This was reported by his lawyer Anatoly Kucherena on January 21.
"As far as I know, she is going through the usual procedure, as it should be for everyone who is eligible. She has been living [in Russia] for more than five years, so the relevant documents have been filed according to the procedure that provides for obtaining citizenship," he shared in a conversation with TASS.
According to the lawyer, Mills should have no problems with the procedure as she complies with the country's laws.
In September 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree granting Snowden Russian citizenship. At that time, the ex-CIA officer stated the positive impact of Russian citizenship on his family. In December of the same year, Kucherena reported that Snowden had received a Russian passport.
Snowden was granted temporary asylum in Russia in August 2013 after he provided The Guardian and The Washington Post newspapers with secret materials on the Internet surveillance programs of the British and U.S. intelligence services in June of the same year.
