Russia is ready for a dialog with the USA on the Ukrainian conflict if relevant signals come from Washington. This was reported by Russian presidential aide Yuriy Ushakov on 21 January.

The topic of the Ukrainian conflict was touched upon during the conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

"From our side it was also noted that we are ready and open to dialog with the new US administration on the Ukrainian conflict. If relevant signals come from Washington, we will pick them up and will be ready to hold relevant talks and appropriate contacts," Ushakov said during the briefing.

The Russian presidential aide also clarified that the Chinese leader shared in general terms the content of the phone conversation with US President Donald Trump during his talks with Putin. Xi Jinping noted that China showed willingness to build relations on a "mutually beneficial, mutually respectful basis" in case the new American leader shows counter interest.

The Chinese chairman and the Russian president had avideo conversation earlier in the day.

Earlier in the day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told TASS that preparations for a phone conversation between Putin and Trump are not yet underway.

On the eve of the new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called ending the conflict in Ukraine a priority for Trump. According to him, "part of the preparatory work" has begun. He also specified that both sides of the conflict should be ready for compromise.

January 20 was the inauguration of Trump, who took the oath of office and became the 47th President of the United States. After that, he reiterated that he plans to meet with Putin as soon as possible and discuss the conflict in Ukraine.
