French President Emmanuel Macron announced a project to recruit more young volunteers to potentially mobilize and strengthen the country's armed forces, Le Monde reported on January 20.

"We will have to better identify volunteers [to] train them and be able to mobilize them when the time comes to reinforce the army in mainland France or elsewhere," he said during a speech to the military in Seson-Sévigné.

The French leader said he wants to offer young people a "firm commitment" and "give them the choice to serve." Journalists noted that Macron has not yet announced clear details of his initiative.

At the same time, he also presented an updated strategic review of France's defense priorities. Macron linked the relevant measures to the "accumulation of threats" to which Paris has to adapt, specified "Gazeta.Ru".

In November 2024, Macron called on Europe to stop delegating the issue of security to the United States and instead act to avoid disappearing from the geopolitical arena. In his opinion, European countries should take responsibility for this sphere and manage it independently.
