Trump signed an executive order withdrawing the U.S. from WHO
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). This follows a CBS News broadcast on January 20.
Trump said that the United States during his presidential term gave contributions to the organization in the amount of $500 million a year, while China - $39 million. The Republican leader noted that the population of the PRC exceeds the number of people living in America, but despite this, China transfers many times less money to the WHO.
The US President noted that such a situation is unfair, so a decision was made to withdraw from the organization.
Earlier, December 22, 2024, the Financial Times newspaper, citing sources, reported that the team of US President-elect Donald Trump wants to achieve the country's withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) on the day of the inauguration of the Republican. It is noted that in this case, the WHO will lose a significant part of its funding, since in 2022 and 2023 the US provided about 16% of its budget.
In 2020, during his previous presidential term, Trump accused WHO of ineffective fight against the coronavirus and influence from China on the activities of the organization. On these grounds, he first announced the suspension of US funding for the WHO and then the country's withdrawal. A few months later, incumbent US President Joe Biden reversed this decision on the day of his inauguration.
The election for the 47th president of the United States took place on November 5, 2024. In the popular vote, Trump received 51% of the vote, while Democratic candidate Kamala Harris received 47.4% of the vote.
