On January 20, the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the U.S. Senate unanimously voted in favor of Marco Rubio's nomination to head the State Department and recommended that the senator be approved for the post. This is reported by The Washington Times.

The vote to confirm Rubio to the post is expected to take place in the near future.

Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee James E. Risch said that the politician at his confirmation hearings "was impeccable in his presentation of American foreign policy."

Earlier, on January 14, Donald Trump nominated Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio for Secretary of State. He said in a statement that Rubio is a highly respected leader who is characterized by a commitment to freedom and justice.

Before that, on November 13, 2024, newly elected American President Donald Trump began forming an administration relatively loyal to him, experts interviewed by Izvestia said. In particular, Vladimir Brovkin, an American historian and former Harvard University professor, believes that Marco Rubio's potential candidacy for the post of US Secretary of State is being considered solely because of the US senator's readiness to fulfill the tasks assigned to him.
