Georgian president says hopes for stronger relations with U.S. under Trump
Georgian President Mikhail Kavelashvili expressed hope that inaugurated US President Donald Trump will take Georgian-American relations to a new level.
"I congratulate Donald Trump, the 47th President of the United States of America, on his inauguration. I hope that under his leadership we will be able to bring Georgian-American relations to a qualitatively new stage," Kavelashvili wrote on his Facebook page (part of Meta, recognized as an extremist organization and banned in Russia).
He also wished Trump success in achieving his goals, "defending his stated values and fighting global challenges."
Earlier in the day, Trump took the oath of office in the Capitol rotunda, becoming the 47th president of the United States. Along with him, Vice President Jay Dee Vance was sworn in. This is Trump's second term as president, the first time he was the American leader from 2017-2021. In his inaugural speech, the new US president announced the beginning of the "golden age of America".
Before the ceremony, Trump and his wife Melania attended a tea party at the White House with outgoing President Joe Biden and his wife Jill.
The election of the 47th president of the United States was held on November 5. In the popular vote, Trump received 51% of the vote, while former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris received 47.4%. Speaking to supporters, the Republican said that his goal as head of state considers the end of military conflicts in the world.
