US President Donald Trump on January 20 criticized former US leader Joe Biden for pardoning a number of individuals.

According to the Republican, the previous administration pardoned "33 real murderers."

"He [Biden] pardoned them for a reason. He spared them, but he didn't spare the people they killed," Trump said in a speech to Republican lawmakers in Congress, broadcast by Reuters.

He also added that Biden pardoned those against whom no criminal charges had been filed, including former chairman of the US Armed Forces Chiefs of Staff Committee Mark Milley, former director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci, members of the House of Representatives special committee investigating the circumstances of the 2021 Capitol assault.

Earlier in the day, Biden preemptively pardoned a number of members of his family, calling the investigations into them "unfounded and politically motivated." According to the former White House chief of staff, his family had been attacked and threatened in a way that was aimed at hurting him. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the situation with the pre-emptive pardon a self-defamatory act.

Earlier, on January 17, Biden commuted the sentences of nearly 2,500 people convicted of non-violent crimes. He granted clemency to those citizens who received long sentences, as well as to those whose sentences were based on outdated rules regarding crimes involving illegal substances.

Prior to that, on January 11, Biden said he may preemptively pardon some individuals who had previously criticized U.S. leader-elect Donald Trump before his departure from the White House.

On December 2, 2024, Biden decided to pardon his son in honor of Thanksgiving. Reacting to this, Hunter Biden stated that he intends to dedicate his life to helping people with addictions. In September, Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to nine felony counts of failing to pay taxes, and in June, he pleaded guilty to three felony counts of gun possession.
