The State Duma called Berbok's words about peace in Ukraine populism
European politicians have already derailed the possibility of concluding a peace agreement on the Ukrainian conflict, and there is no more trust in them. For example, the statement by German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock about peace in Ukraine is populism - the conflict will end if the West stops supporting Kiev. This was stated by State Duma deputy Mikhail Sheremet on January 20.
The day before, the German minister in an interview with N-TV called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the advance of Russian troops in Ukraine and retreat, because only after that the West will be able to guarantee peace. In addition, Berbock emphasized that Germany should become a leader in the fight for Ukraine.
"I am sure that this is just ordinary populism, nothing more. We know the European guarantees that they gave repeatedly, we know how Europe derailed the peace agreement, we know how Europe brought the nationalist regime in Ukraine to power. So there is absolutely no trust in their words," Duma TV for Izvestia quotes Sheremet's commentary.
At the same time, the MP expressed hope that European politicians would turn to common sense and in the future stop financing "the fascist regime that came to Ukraine". The newspaper's interlocutor noted, among other things, that Europe has already traveled the path of supporting fascism and knows how it ends. In addition, he concluded, the conflict will immediately stop if Kiev's Western partners stop the aid.
Prior to that, on January 12, it was reported that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that his department has prepared a new package of military aid to Ukraine, and also stressed that Scholz does not prevent such a decision.
Earlier, on January 10, the media reported that the German Chancellor blocked a new billion-dollar package for Ukraine, which was promoted by the heads of the German Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry. It is specified that the ministers wanted to provide new aid to Kiev in the amount of €3bn before the Bundestag election scheduled for February 23.
In addition, on November 7, political analyst Nikita Setov told Izvestia that aid to Ukraine is the reason for the split of Germany's ruling coalition. According to him, Scholz, against the backdrop of Republican Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, wanted to demonstrate that Berlin remains committed to supporting Kiev, but the idea was not welcomed in the German Cabinet.
Western countries have stepped up military and financial support for Ukraine amid Russia's special operation to defend Donbass, which was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, 2022, after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
