US President-elect Donald Trump's intention to call Russian leader Vladimir Putin after his inauguration is related to the Ukrainian conflict. This opinion was expressed by Svetlana Zhurova, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Foreign Affairs, on Monday, January 20.

"First of all, they had repeatedly talked on the same phone during Trump's previous reign, and if it had not been for Trump's accusations at the time that Russia helped him get elected, then, most likely, these contacts already at that period would have been a little more positive than they turned out to be in the end. Probably, he was a hostage to that situation," the MP said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru.

The parliamentarian believes that now it will be easier for Russian and American politicians to establish contact.

"Now it is much easier to communicate with Putin, especially the reason there is a serious - it is peace talks and the fact that Trump promised the whole world that in six months he is ready to facilitate these peace talks from his side, to influence Ukraine," - emphasized Zhurova.

"It is definitely not necessary to influence us, our President has outlined everything, here the question is only already in Ukraine itself, so, probably, Trump wants to talk. Apparently, will try to persuade our President to give up some conditions, but it is unlikely," she added.

Earlier in the day, CNN reported, citing sources, that Trump instructed to organize a phone conversation with Putin a few days after the inauguration, RT reports.

It is noted that one of the purposes of the conversation will be to discuss the organization of a personal meeting between the two politicians in the coming months to try to end the conflict in Ukraine, 360.ru reported.

On January 19, at a rally before his supporters at the Capital One sports arena in Washington, D.C., Trump again promised to end the conflict in Ukraine and prevent World War III.

A day earlier, Trump's former national security adviser John Bolton said in an interview with Japanese TV channel NHK that Trump wants to end the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible without caring about the terms of the settlement. According to him, this is bad news for Ukraine, and Russia, in turn, may be interested in such an aspiration of the future American leader.

On January 10, Trump once again stressed the need to "end" the Ukrainian conflict. He added that he was preparing for a meeting with Putin after his inauguration.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which was announced by the Russian president on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
