More than 7,000 US National Guard troops have been deployed to Washington to provide security during the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. This is reported by the newspaper Stars and Stripes on January 18.

The publication writes that Guard soldiers from more than 40 US states and territories will be on duty.

"When thousands of National Guard soldiers and law enforcement officers blockaded Washington four years ago during racial protests and riots <...>, the blurring of camouflage and helmets made it nearly impossible to distinguish between police and military," the newspaper writes.

Therefore, the National Guard leaders authorized the use of a special armband so that the troops could be accurately distinguished.

National Guard troops will support the police in the U.S. Capitol building. They will primarily serve in a support role, including street policing, traffic control and other functions.

On Monday, January 20, Donald Trump's inauguration ceremony will be held in Washington. It will be the second inauguration for the politician. Trump will again take the oath of allegiance to the American Constitution and will head the White House. Traditionally, the ceremony is held at the Capitol, which is the home of the US Congress and represents the legislative branch of government. It will begin at 20:00 Moscow time.

Earlier, on January 15, it became known that the U.S. law enforcement agencies are worried that the inauguration ceremony of Trump may cause attention and encourage various extremist communities.

The election of the 47th President of the United States was held on November 5, 2024. In the popular vote, Trump received 51% of the vote, while Democratic candidate Kamala Harris received 47.4% of the vote. Later, the Republican, speaking to supporters, called himself the 47th president of the United States and said that his goal as head of state considers the end of military conflicts in the world.
