Russian gas continues to enter the EU market despite attempts to reject it, European Commission spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said on January 20.

"Despite these significant results [of said efforts], Russian gas is present on the EU market," she said at a briefing in Brussels, a recording of which is available on the EC website.

Itkonen specified that a strategy on how Brussels intends to completely get rid of Russian energy resources will be published in the near future.

Earlier, on January 17, Politico reported that the EU is buying Russian gas in record quantities, despite the recent halt of supplies from Russia through the Ukrainian territory. Thus, for the first 15 days of 2025, the 27 countries of the association imported 837.3 thousand tons of liquefied natural gas from Russia.

Since January 1, Gazprom has stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system. The state corporation said that this happened due to Ukraine's refusal to extend the agreement.
