- Media reported about Kiev's establishment of centers in Germany for the return of Ukrainian refugees
Kiev will set up centers in Germany for the return of Ukrainian refugees. This was announced by the head of the Ukrainian national unity ministry, Oleksiy Chernyshov, on 20 January.
As it is specified, Unity Hubs ("Unity Hubs") will be designed to help Ukrainians returning to their homeland to find jobs and housing, as well as to receive education.
"A significant number of Ukrainians are seriously considering returning to their homeland," Chernyshov said. His words are quoted by the German TV channel N-TV.
It is reported that last week he took part in preparations for the opening of a similar center in Berlin.
Chernyshov added that Ukraine is particularly in need of specialists in defense production, energy and reconstruction. According to him, these sectors are critically important. He also promised that the workers of these sectors returning to the country would allegedly be exempted from military service.
Chernyshov said on January 7 that Kiev had begun the process of returning citizens who are abroad. Coercive measures will not be applied to them, he noted at the time. According to him, there are now 20-25 million Ukrainians abroad
In December last year, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Ukrainian refugees to more actively seek work in Germany, otherwise they should return to their homeland. The chancellor also announced plans to create a Ukrainian administration in the country to coordinate refugee issues.
On December 20, it was reported that the Finnish authorities were thinking about finding a legal way to return Ukrainian refugees to their homeland. At the same time, in 2024, the Finnish migration service was able to make only three official decisions on the return of Ukrainian citizens home.
European countries started to accommodate Ukrainian refugees on their territories since the beginning of Russia's special operation to protect Donbas, which Russia announced on 24 February 2022.
