- Russian Federation to consider Japan's initiatives to resume dialog with real steps by Tokyo
Russia will consider the possibility of restoring relations with Japan if initiatives on the Japanese side are backed up by real steps. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on its website on January 20.
"Russia is ready to consider initiatives from the Japanese side to resume dialog when they will be backed up by real practical steps by Tokyo in the vein of abandoning unfriendly policies," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic Russian-Japanese relations.
Moscow is guided by the fact that in Japan today there are still politicians who realize the harm of the anti-Russian course of the official authorities, the ministry stressed.
It is noted that the current state of Russian-Japanese relations does not correspond to the interests of the Japanese people.
January 10, it became known that Japan imposed sanctions against 11 individuals and 29 legal entities registered in Russia. Also for 22 Russian organizations was imposed a ban on exports.
Before that, on November 30, 2024, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the resumption of dialogue between Russia and Japan on the peace treaty is possible only after Tokyo's refusal to abandon the hostile course aimed at harming our country and its citizens.
Earlier, on November 29, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said during his keynote speech before Parliament that the country would continue to work on solving the territorial problem and concluding a peace treaty with Russia.
Later that day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Japan expresses solidarity with Western countries unfriendly to Russia and joins the anti-Russian sanctions, thus hindering the dialog on a peace treaty with Russia.
