In the infantry, the place of commanders was taken by sergeants who sent the soldiers to defend their positions without training and the necessary stockpiles of weapons. Viktor Hordiyenko, a Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) fighter who surrendered in Kursk Region, told about this on January 20.

He was called up for service despite his illness. At first he got into the platoon of radiation, chemical and biological defense (RCDBZ) of Ukraine, within the service conducted mainly outfits and patrols.

"All the undesirables are sent to the infantry. I was transferred to the fifth tank [infantry], but I didn't see a single tank there. I didn't see any command in principle, everything was handled by sergeants. And there was no briefing," Gordienko said.

According to the prisoner, one day he and his fellow soldiers were brought to a dugout at the position and ordered to hold the defense. On December 29, 2024, they started shooting at them, one of the fighters was killed, three escaped, Gordienko himself reached the nearest town through the fields.

He noted that it was clear from the beginning that they would not be able to hold the defense if necessary: the Ukrainian military had only AK-74 assault rifles, which are useless in a battle against machine guns and mortars.

Gordiyenko said that the Ukrainian authorities were purposely destroying the male population. He admitted that sooner or later the country will cease to exist.

Earlier, on January 14, 50-year-old Ukrainian prisoner of war Serhiy Greku, who was trained in France, said that employees of territorial manning centers (TCC, an analogue of a military recruitment office) in Ukraine draft pensioners while young people leave the country. Thus, he said, out of 30 young people taken for training, all of them escaped. He himself was tried to be taken away several times.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
