Greenland intends to charge a toll for passage through its Arctic waters
Greenland is going to charge a fee from ships that pass through its Arctic waters. This was announced on January 20 by Kuno Fenker, the island's MP from the government coalition party Siumut Kuno Fenker.
"You charge a fee and escort all vessels passing through your Arctic waters. We will do the same," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to him, there are many fishermen in the Greenlandic waters of the Arctic and the authorities should "be able to check fishing vessels" around the island. Fenker among other things noted the need to use their right on the waterways.
Earlier, Fenker said that Greenland intends to extend the defense agreement with the United States without the participation of Denmark. The MP emphasized that the island could conclude a separate agreement with Denmark. He also noted that the same agreements could be reached with the European Union.
