- Qatar's Foreign Ministry named a date to start discussing details of the second phase of the Gaza deal
TheUS, Egypt and Qatar will begin consultations to agree on the details of a Gaza deal between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement on the 16th day after the ceasefire. Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid bin Mohammed al-Ansari said on January 19.
"On the 16th day of the agreement, the guarantors will start work <...> to hold talks on the implementation of the second phase of the agreement," he said in an interview with Al Jazeera TV.
He specified that the mediators are monitoring the implementation of the points of the agreement through the operational headquarters in Cairo. In addition, al-Ansari added that the guarantor countries have full control over the process of transferring hostages between Israel and Hamas. They are also monitoring the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.
Hamas handed over Gonen, Damari and Steinbrecher to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) earlier in the day. The organization soon handed over the three hostages to Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip. The girls Romy Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher have already arrived at the medical center and met their families.
The ceasefire agreement in Gaza became known on January 15. The next day, the Defense Ministry and the IDF began preparations to implement the agreement. In particular, the State Ministry of Defense's Directorate of Checkpoints and the Design Department were involved in the implementation of the deal in order to speed up logistics.
Theceasefire regime in the Gaza Strip began on the morning of January 19, as agreed upon by both sides and mediators. The Israeli government approved the agreement with the Palestinian Hamas movement on January 17 following a six-hour meeting.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip into Israel. On the same day, Israel began to launch retaliatory strikes.
