Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (term expired in May 2024) is flattering US President-elect Donald Trump in an attempt to win his favor. This was reported by CNN on January 19.

According to the media, Zelensky said in his New Year's address that he has no doubts about the ability of the American president-elect to achieve peace and end the conflict in Ukraine.

It is also noted that a couple days after that, the Ukrainian leader expressed the opinion that Trump won the presidential election because he was "much stronger" than the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

CNN recalled that under incumbent President Joe Biden, the United States became the largest provider of military aid to Ukraine, so Kiev realizes that in order to continue to provide the country with support, it needs to stay on Trump's side.

"Unfortunately, Zelensky can't afford to be hostile to Trump", Joanna Khosa, a research fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, told CNN.

While flattery is a common tactic to win the president-elect's favor, his unpredictability makes it clear: there's no guarantee it will work, CNN concluded.

Earlier, on January 15, it was reported that the Trump administration is preparing sanctions against Zelensky's entourage and the head of his office, Andrei Yermak.

Prior to that, on January 8, retired U.S. Armed Forces Lt. Col. Daniel Davis said that Trump had strongly signaled that he had no plans to offer Ukraine NATO membership, and thus "fired a warning shot" in the direction of the Ukrainian president and European leaders.

Trump's team said on Dec. 13, 2024, that it was discussing with the current White House administration and Ukrainian officials an end to the Ukrainian conflict. At the same time, the president-elect's special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, allowed for the end of this crisis in the coming months.

The special operation to protect Donbass, the start of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the backdrop of the worsening situation in the region.
