- Former Moldovan prime minister accused the country's authorities of building a business on people's misfortune
By not letting gas into Transnistria, the Moldovan authorities are making business on human suffering. This was reported by the country's former prime minister Vladislav Filat on January 18.
"The condition of supplying natural gas to the left bank of the Dniester exclusively through Moldovagaz. This is not just a technical measure, it is an actual sentence of cold and suffering for tens of thousands of people," he wrote in his Telegram channel.
According to Filat, the authorities deliberately block gas supplies to the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR). Because of this, the government's desire to monopolize the gas sector is becoming more and more obvious.
"Urgent problems are being ignored. There are no effective and viable solutions. The authorities capitalize on the crisis, raising doubts about their loyalty to the people and respect for basic human rights. <...> While citizens are suffering, a group of 'good people' is lining their pockets," the former prime minister said.
He called on Moldovan President Maia Sandu to stop looking for the guilty and prove the ability to "lead the country in the interests of all its citizens."
Earlier, on January 17, the head of the unrecognized DMR, Vadim Krasnoselsky, asked Sandu not to interfere with gas supplies from Russia. According to him, the goal pursued by Moldovan officials is to aggravate the existing crisis.
A day earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia was ready to help Transnistria in the fight against the gas crisis.
It became known on January 15 that Russia would start humanitarian gas supplies to the DMR. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed dissatisfaction with these aid measures.
Since January 1, 2025 , Gazprom has stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system due to Ukraine 's refusal to extend the transit agreement.
An economic state of emergency has been in effect in Transnistria since December 9, 2024. In early January, it was reported that 1.5 thousand multi-storey and 72 thousand private houses were left without heat and gas.
