West calls EU plans to abandon aluminum and LNG from Russia suicidal
A potential ban by the European Union (EU) on imports of Russian aluminum and liquefied natural gas (LNG) is equal to economic suicide. Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of Southeastern Norway, said on January 19.
"The EU is ready to commit economic suicide to weaken Russia," he wrote on the social network X (former Twitter).
He also noted that the US has a "sense of self-preservation" in this matter, but at the same time Washington is not preventing the EU from committing suicide.
The EU's plans to impose restrictions on Russian aluminum and LNG exports as part of new measures against Russia were reported on January 15.
Prior to that, on December 28, former French MEP Hervé Juvene told Izvestia that the EU ' s anti-Russian sanctions have not worked and Russia has only strengthened its economy on the back of them
Western countries have tightened sanctions pressure on Russia in connection with the special operation to protect Donbass. The decision to launch the operation was announced on February 24, 2022 after the situation in the region worsened due to shelling by the Ukrainian military.
