In the Gaza Strip, eight people killed and 25 injured in Israeli shelling
Eight people were killed and 25 wounded as a result of Israeli shelling in two areas of the Gaza Strip. This was reported by Reuters on January 19, citing the Palestinian Civil Emergency Service.
"At least eight Palestinians were killed and 25 wounded in Gaza due to a delay in the implementation of the ceasefire," the publication said.
The strikes came as the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip failed to take effect as the Palestinian Hamas movement failed to fulfill its obligation to send Israel a list of hostages to be released today.
The Israel Army (IDF) continues to launch unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strikes against targets in Gaza in the northern and central parts, the agency's press office said on the X social network (formerly Twitter).
That the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip has not taken effect due to Hamas' failure to fulfill the terms of the deal was announced earlier in the day by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Palestinian movement, for its part, said the delay in providing the list was due to technical reasons.
The day before, Netanyahu said that the IDF could resume fighting in the Gaza Strip if necessary. He promised that the return to fighting, if necessary, would be carried out by the Israeli army with even greater force.
Theceasefire in the Gaza Strip was to begin on the morning of January 19, as agreed by both sides and mediators. The Israeli government approved the agreement with the Palestinian Hamas movement on January 17 following a six-hour meeting.
The Gaza ceasefire agreement was announced on January 15. The next day, the Ministry of Defense and the IDF began preparations to implement the agreement. In particular, the State Defense Ministry's Directorate of Checkpoints and the Design Department will be involved in the implementation of the deal in order to speed up logistics.
The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when Hamas subjected Israel's territory to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
