Russia's Islam Makhachev defeated his Brazilian opponent Renato Moicano to defend his Absolute Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight title. The fight took place at UFC 311 in Los Angeles on January 19.

The fight was completed in the first round when Makhachev successfully applied a choke hold against his opponent. The fight lasted 3 minutes and 31 seconds.

Makhachev was originally scheduled to fight against his compatriot Arman Tsarukyan, but his opponent withdrew at the last minute due to injury. Tsarukyan was replaced by Moicano.

Makhachev has 27 wins in MMA and one defeat to his credit, which was in 2015. He became the UFC lightweight champion on October 22, 2022 by defeating Brazilian Charles Oliveira at UFC 280. He said that he dedicated his victory over his Brazilian opponent to Khabib Nurmagomedov's father. According to the athlete, to this moment he was going and trained all his life.

On the same day, Russian mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Umar Nurmagomedov lost to Georgian Merab Dvalishvili in a fight for the Absolute Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight title.
