South Korean President Yun Seok-yol may be sentenced to life imprisonment if he is found guilty of leading an uprising. This was reported by Yonhap News Agency on January 19.

"If President Yoon is found guilty in court of being the leader of the uprising, he could be sentenced to life imprisonment or death," the publication said.

However, as the agency notes, if there are mitigating circumstances, imprisonment for a certain period of time may be appointed. It is specified that the leader will be brought to trial in February after an investigation by the Corruption Investigation Department. According to the agency, it will be conducted for about 20 days.

At the same time, according to the law, the department can not directly initiate a criminal case, so the results of the activities will be transferred to the special headquarters of the Prosecutor's Office for Martial Law Emergency, which, in turn, will already bring charges against Yoon Seok-yeol.

The court can extend the detention for up to six months, so it is expected that the results of the first trial in the case will be released in early August. If the first trial verdict is not issued within that period, the president will be released and tried without detention.

The court issued the first arrestwarrant for Yoon Seok-yeol at the end of December 2024. On January 3 this year, it was reported that law enforcers arrived at the South Korean president's residence to arrest him. At that time, it was also reported that the President's security service did not allow the investigation to search his residence in Seoul. A warrant for the republican president's re-arrest was issued on Jan. 7.

Yoon Seok-yeol was arrested on January 15, the detention was designed to last 48 hours, during which the court was to decide on further detention. The hearing began on January 18 at 14:00 local time (8:00 Moscow time) and lasted five hours.

As a result, the Seoul Western District Court ordered the South Korean leader's detention. The court ruling allows investigators to keep the head of state in custody for up to 20 days. This period includes the days that Yun Seok-yol spent in custody after being detained at his Seoul residence. Supporters of the president pogromed the court after the decision to detain the country's leader.

The situation in the Republic of Korea escalated in early December 2024, when President Yun Seok-yol declared martial law. The reason for such a step he called the threat of paralysis of power, arising from attempts to conduct impeachment proceedings. The commander of the emergency regime - Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces Park Ahn Soo - noted that until martial law is lifted in the republic, the activities of the parliament, political parties and associations are prohibited. Military equipment was brought to the streets of Seoul.
