- The State Duma warned of the dangers of storing confidential information on Gmail
The Gmail mail service is unsafe for storing confidential information on it. This was stated by Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, on January 19.
According to him, the number of users of Google services, including Gmail, from Russia is gradually falling, although it is still high.
"And what's more, many still store important data there, despite the problems with login and two-factor authentication, which are already being fixed in Russia. This in fact unleashes the hands of fraudsters and makes Gmail extremely unsafe for storing any sensitive information," Nemkin told RIA Novosti.
The deputy also urged Russians to switch to domestic analogs, as it is unknown what anti-Russian steps foreign services will take in the future. He noted that domestic electronic mail services are actively developing and offer competitive solutions.
"Such services provide not only stability of operation on the territory of Russia, but also additional data protection measures that meet local information security standards," Nemkin emphasized and added that many domestic services already offer integration with popular tools.
The deputy also reminded about the importance of regularly updating passwords, using authentication methods, backing up information to cloud services or local devices in order to ensure information security.
"Google's policy, which it has been following for the last few years, systematically leads to the fact that the number of failures in the work of the IT giant in Russia will grow - on its own initiative. The number of security problems will also grow, up to the inability to use services that users have become accustomed to," Nemkin believes.
Earlier, on November 2, 2024, Nemkin urged Russians to refuse to link Google accounts to banks and government services. According to the official, the safest thing for today is to switch to the use of Russian analogs of such programs.
Before that, on October 30 of the same year, the developers of "Gosusluzhi" called on users to transfer their mail from the Gmail mail service to the Russian analog. In a mailing to users, it was noted that they could lose access to their accounts after Google restricted the use of SMS confirmation for creating new profiles.
