- The U.S. has warned that the country's $36 trillion national debt ceiling will soon be reached
The U.S. national debt will reach its limit, which is equal to about $36 million, as early as Tuesday, January 21. This was reported by CNN on January 18 with reference to outgoing U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.
"The country will reach its debt limit of about $36 trillion on Tuesday, when the Treasury Department begins taking extraordinary measures to allow the government to pay its bills," - said in the material of the TV channel.
It is specified that reaching the ceiling of the national debt will increase pressure on the future administration of the White House headed by the elected US President Donald Trump. According to Yellen, they will have a little time to correct the situation and prevent the first default in history caused by global economic turmoil.
Earlier in the day, Yellen said that the introduction of emergency measures to prevent a default in the United States will begin on January 21. She clarified that the period of time during which the measures to prevent default may operate has not been determined. However, according to the "debt issuance suspension period," certain payments and transactions will be suspended until March 14.
Prior to that, on December 28, 2024, the US Treasury chief said that the country would return to a fixed government debt ceiling on January 2. She also warned that after America reaches the debt ceiling between January 14 and January 23, the U.S. Ministry of Finance will be forced to take emergency measures to avoid a possible default.
Specialists of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on June 27 of the same year called the growth of the U.S. national debt a threat to the world economy. Thus, by 2032, the country's national debt may exceed 140% of GDP. The IMF urged American politicians to carefully consider raising indirect taxes and gradually increasing income tax.
