The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil has announced that Nigeria has joined BRICS as a partner country of the association. The corresponding statement was published on January 17 on the website of the Brazilian Cabinet.

"The Brazilian government announces today, January 17, 2025, the official accession of Nigeria as a partner country of the association. The Brazilian government welcomes the decision of the Nigerian government," the statement said.

Nigeria became the ninth partner country of BRICS. It is specified that the African republic promotes the strengthening of cooperation between the countries of the Global South and advocates reform of global governance.

Earlier, on January 6, the government of Brazil, which plays the role of BRICS chair in 2025, officially announced Indonesia's accession to the association. The republic's membership was approved under the BRICS enlargement guidelines, criteria and procedures.

BRICS is an interstate association of countries. On the eve of the summit in Kazan, held from October 22 to 24, 2024, 35 applications were received to join the association. On January 1, 2025, Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan joined the BRICS as partners.
