- Politico has learned of Starmer's plans to remain Britain's prime minister for 10 years
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer intends to remain in office for 10 years, despite political setbacks. He said this in an interview with Politico newspaper on January 17.
Thus, Starmer dispelled rumors about early parliamentary elections and said that the next elections will be held no earlier than mid-2029, which he plans to win. In his view, Labor needs 10 years to "get Britain back on track."
"Yes, we want a decade of national renewal. I've always said it will take time. We will see significant changes in the first term of the Labor government, but we are talking about a decade of national renewal and I intend to lead it," Starmer said when asked if he personally intends to serve a full two terms as prime minister.
Earlier, on January 14, it became known about the growing number of Britons dissatisfied with Starmer's work. According to research by the British company YouGov, 64% of Britons believe that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is poorly coping with his official duties, 12% of respondents could not give an assessment of Starmer's work, and only 24% of participants supported him.
Prior to that, on January 9, The Financial Times reported that American entrepreneur and billionaire Ilon Musk discussed with his associates the possibility of removing Starmer from his post before the next parliamentary elections.
On January 6, the entrepreneur said that the U.S. should free the citizens of Britain from the tyranny of Starmer's rule. Musk attached a poll to the publication asking for agreement or denial of this position.
Before that, on January 2, Musk said that new parliamentary elections should be held in the UK. Thus he commented on the results of the poll about the unprecedented decline in support for the Labor government led by Starmer.
On July 4, 2024, parliamentary elections to the House of Commons were held in the UK, as a result of which the Labor Party won with a huge margin. In second place was the Conservative Party (Tories), led by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. In third place were the Liberal Democrats.
Labor leader Keir Starmer took office as Prime Minister of Great Britain on July 5. The same day he formed a new government. Angela Rayner will be the Deputy Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Development, Housing and Communities. In addition, Labor Party representative Rachel Reeves became the new finance minister in the government. David Lammy and John Healey have been appointed to head the Foreign and Defense Ministries.
