The Bolivian court of the Tarija department has granted a motion filed by the prosecutor's office for the arrest of former President Evo Morales. This was reported by the newspaper El Deber on January 17.

According to the newspaper, the court decided to reject all motions of the former president's lawyers. It is noted that Morales is suspected of human trafficking. The former President of Bolivia himself was not present at the trial.

In addition, as noted in the publication, the court also sent letters to financial organizations to freeze accounts and annotate the assets of Morales.

The Bolivian prosecutor's office is investigating the former president. Morales is suspected of molesting a minor and human trafficking. In addition, two former parliamentarians have accused the politician of corruption.

In November 2024, Morales called on his supporters to unblock the roads, and then went on hunger strike - until the government will not negotiate with the protesters. He said he decided to go on hunger strike "until the government begins a dialog on the economy and politics."

In mid-September of that year, the former Bolivian president led a march of thousands to protest the policies of current head of state Luis Arce. Arce, in turn, accused his predecessor of preparing a coup d'état and seeking to return to power illegally.

Evo Morales resigned as president in 2019 amid protests following his election victory. Bolivia's 2019 presidential election drew criticism from both the Bolivian opposition and the Organization of American States, which oversaw the voting process.

It was followed by the resignation of Bolivia's entire top leadership. Power passed to the opposition Deputy Speaker of the Senate, Jeanine Agnès. In 2020, a new presidential election resulted in power going to socialist Luis Arce, who is a Morales supporter.
