Russian President Vladimir Putin opposed the use of international law norms in the interests of one or a group of states. He said this on January 17 when answering the question of Izvestiya correspondent Viktor Sineok.

Putin said that the balance of power in the Middle East during the transition from the old world order to a multipolar model of the world should be based on the United Nations (UN) Charter.

"This is what we should strive for, this is what we should go for and not try to use the norms of international law in some selfish interests, momentarily turning one or a group of states in a favorable direction. And not to replace the UN Charter with some rules, which, as I have already said a thousand times, no one has seen," the Russian leader said when asked how to maintain the balance of power in a turbulent world order.

Putin also recalled that the UN was created to find acceptable solutions and to prevent the implementation of unilateral unacceptable ones. He called for a return to understanding the reasons for the creation of an international organization and following the principles established by the UN Charter.

The day before, political scientist and journalist Yuri Svetov expressed the opinion that the team of the current US President Joe Biden continued the work of the previous administrations of the country to destroy the authority of the UN.

Earlier, on January 15, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the organization supports the ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip and is ready to assist in its implementation. He also emphasized that the UN is "unwavering in its commitment" to peace and stability in the region, and will do everything to provide support to the peaceful population.

The situation in the Middle East escalated on the morning of October 7, 2023, when the Palestinian radical movement Hamas subjected Israeli territory to a massive rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. On the same day, Israel began retaliatory strikes.
