- Yemen's Houthis claimed an attack on the U.S. aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea
Yemeni Houthis attacked the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Yahya Saria, a spokesman for the Houthi-formed armed forces, said on January 17.
"This attack on the aircraft carrier was the seventh since its arrival in the Red Sea," Al Mayadeen TV channel quoted him as saying on Telegram.
The representative of the Yemeni Armed Forces also noted that the missile strike was carried out on "critical targets" in the city of Eilat in Israel.
Earlier, on January 15, the Yemeni Houthis reported a cruise missile and drone strike on the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea.
Prior to that, on Jan. 10, Yahya Saria, a military spokesman for Yemen's Ansar Allah movement, also said the Houthis had struck a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Red Sea. He said the aircraft carrier was preparing a new Yemeni air attack and because of the Houthi strike, the USS Harry Truman had to suspend that work and withdraw from the northern Red Sea.
The Houthis began striking ships in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in November 2023 to protest Israeli actions in the Gaza Strip. On the night of January 12, 2024, in response to their actions, the U.S. and Britain launched an attack on Houthi targets in Yemen. The White House said the strikes on movement-controlled areas of the country were defensive in nature. It was also claimed at the time that the strikes were carried out to protect international vessels.
