On Friday, January 17, Pavel Kovalenko, an information security specialist and director of the fraud prevention center of the company Informzaschita, named the most relevant methods of deception for attackers.

According to the expert, the most common type of fraud remains calls allegedly from bank employees. Attackers report "suspicious transactions" and under the pretext of protecting funds, they trick out confidential data or persuade the interlocutor to transfer money to a "safe account". To gain trust in customers, they use phone number spoofing techniques and professional vocabulary, Kovalenko warned.

"In 2024, fraudsters have also become more active in using dipfakes to deceive bank customers. The number of such incidents increased by 13%," the infosecurity expert told Lenta.Ru.

He added that against the backdrop of growing interest in investments, cases of creating fake trading platforms have become more frequent. Fraudsters offer to invest in cryptocurrency or stocks, demonstrate fictitious profits on specially created sites and disappear after receiving a large sum.

In addition, the expert noted that in the sphere of online trading, criminals create copies of well-known stores or completely fake sites. Buyers are attracted by improbably low prices and favorable promotions, and after payment the goods are either not delivered or they turn out to be fake.

Kovalenko noted that fraud in social networks remains widespread. Attackers often hack into users' accounts or create copies of them, and then send out messages asking for financial help.

"Even more popular are fraudulent hoaxes that require you to pay a commission, shipping, tax and other non-existent charges to get the 'winnings'. Another popular scheme is blackmail after accounts are hacked. Criminals gain access to accounts and demand ransom, threatening to publish personal information or compromising materials," the security officer said.

According to him, the scheme of creating fake fundraisers for the needy remains relevant. Fraudsters ask to help sick children, homeless animals or residents of border regions.

The day before "Izvestia" wrote that analysts of the company F.A.C.C.T. warned Russians about a new method of fraud. They reported that recently attackers have been stealing cryptocurrency under the pretext of distributing collectible virtual gifts in Telegram, reports NSN.

On January 15, the State Duma adopted in the first reading a bill to protect Russians from fraudsters who force them to take loans, reports 360.ru. The deputies proposed to introduce a so-called cooling-off period, in which the borrowed money can not be used.

For amounts up to 200 thousand rubles it will be four hours, and for larger amounts - two days, RT reports. During this time it will be possible to contact the bank and refuse the loan if it was taken under pressure from fraudsters. In turn, banks and MFIs will be obliged to conduct additional checks on transactions.
