Climatologist and climate expert of the "Nature and People" Foundation Alexei Kokorin admitted that winter at the latitude of Moscow in 40-50 years will become warmer by 3-4 degrees.

In a conversation with aif.ru on Friday, January 17, the expert noted that, according to forecasts, in the future it will be warmer. Winter in the capital has warmed by three degrees over the last half century, and this trend may accelerate.

"Perhaps in 40-50 years global warming will stabilize thanks to the joint efforts of all countries to achieve carbon neutrality. By that time, winter will warm by another 3-4 degrees," Kokorin noted.

He added that the frequency of waves of warm winter and heat waves in summer will increase two to three times. According to him, in the previous 10 years warm periods lasting three weeks or a month were eight times, and in 40-50 years they will become 24. He pointed out that we should not expect a smooth warming of winter, but more frequent heat waves, which will last about 20 days.

On January 16, Anatoly Batashev, Chairman of the Moscow regional environmental NGO "Ecosila 50", spoke about the possible impact of warm winter on Lake Baikal. According to him, the current situation will have a strong impact on the ecosystem, as there are both relatively warm winters and cold winters, and nature adapts to it. If the lake itself starts to heat up, then it may change its ecosystem, RT writes.

On the same day, the scientific head of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center Roman Vilfand said that 2024 was the hottest year in the history of instrumental observations, which experts have been conducting since 1850. He noted that such records are a curious but alarming fact for climatologists, notes 360.ru. Vilfand also said that the hottest day in history was July 22, 2024, when the average daily temperature on Earth was 17.16 degrees.

January 15, meteorologist, leading expert of the weather center "Phobos" Evgeny Tishkovets said that the second half of winter in Moscow will be even warmer than the first. The average winter air temperature in the capital is 3.6 degrees above the climatic norm, and January is approaching the warmest January of 2020, writes "Moscow 24". Precipitation has fallen only 80 mm, which is three quarters of what is supposed to fall, according to the agency of city news "Moscow". The height of the snow cover is 6 mm, which is five times lower than the norm. Tishkovets summarized that the current winter can be called "Schrödinger's winter", which is both is and is not at the same time, notes the website kp.ru.
