Slovakia says EU stagnates compared to Russia, China and the US
The European Union is stagnating and is behind Russia and other major world powers at every turn, Slovak parliamentary deputy speaker Andrej Danko said on January 17.
"The European Union is stagnating. We are overtaken at every step by great powers such as the Russian Federation, China, India, the United States," he said on air on the TASR news agency, an excerpt of which is posted on the politician's YouTube channel.
Danko also questioned whether it should be considered normal that Slovakia would buy nuclear fuel from Russia at higher prices from France. He asked a similar question on the topic of Russian liquefied natural gas supplies from Western companies.
In addition, Danko pointed to Bratislava's understanding of the situation in Ukraine, whose president Vladimir Zelensky (whose term of office expired on May 20, 2024) is literally cutting Slovaks off from gas. At the same time, he noted that Slovakia is forced to take billions of dollars in loans for the sake of maintaining energy prices for its population.
The politician expressed the opinion that if US President-elect Donald Trump raises the topics of the Panama Canal and Greenland, he should also solve the Ukrainian problem.
Earlier, on January 14, Danko told Izvestia that Slovakia could receive Russian gas also through the Turkish Stream. At the same time, he called the possible price of such supplies a question.
Before that, on January 13, Fitzo offered Zelensky to meet and discuss gas transit from Russia through Ukraine. In response, Zelensky offered him to come to Kiev.
On January 1, 2025, Gazprom announced the suspension of gas supplies through Ukraine, which refused to extend the transit agreement despite the Russian side's willingness to continue exports. Fitzo noted that this would have drastic consequences for the EU, but not for Russia.
