Transnistrian head urges Sandu not to interfere with gas supplies from Russia
The head of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR), Vadim Krasnoselsky, has asked Moldovan President Maya Sandu not to interfere with gas supplies from Russia.
"With the emergence of an actual solution to the problem and a real supplier - a Moldovan firm licensed to transport and supply gas, we are seeing fierce resistance from Moldovan officials who are doing everything to ensure that the supply of a vital energy resource is not realized," he wrote in his Telegram channel on January 17.
According to Krasnoselsky, the goal pursued by these officials is to further aggravate the existing crisis.
He asked Sandu to do her best in this situation and keep her promise to let natural gas into Transnistria, which was made at a briefing on January 14.
The day before, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia was ready to assist Transnistria in dealing with the gas crisis. At the same time, he emphasized that Chisinau should ensure the conclusion of contracts and offer logistical solutions for supplies.
Earlier, on January 15, Krasnoselsky said that Russia would start humanitarian gas supplies to Transnistria amid the energy crisis. Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean expressed dissatisfaction with the aid measures.
Gazprom has stopped supplying fuel to Europe through the Ukrainian gas transportation system since January 1, 2025 due to Ukraine's refusal to extend the transit agreement.
An economic state of emergency has been in effect in Transnistria since December 9, 2024. In early January, it was reported that 1.5 thousand multi-storey and 72 thousand private houses were left without heat and gas. The DMR government said on 8 January that the region was in a state of energy and humanitarian crisis and a critical situation.
