The Russian Armed Forces have captured Ukrainian army fighters during the liberation of the settlements of Leonidovo and Aleksandrich in Kursk Region. Images of the assault by units of Crimean paratroopers on a Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) stronghold were published by the Russian Defense Ministry on January 17.
"Airborne troops assault groups, using the entire arsenal of small arms, stormed the settlements. The enemy fled, abandoning the wounded and killed. Some of the militants laid down their arms and surrendered," the Defense Ministry said in a statement.
The paratroopers uncovered the defense system, the main strongholds and firing positions of the AFU during reconnaissance operations in Leonidovo and Alexandria. After that, artillery and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) destroyed equipment, control points and fighting positions of the AFU.
After that, the paratroopers went on an assault with aerial support from drones, which also warned of newly uncovered AFU firepower and mined advance routes.
"We liberated two settlements of the most important ones. The assault was directly planned. [The AFU] abandoned the mercenaries in advance, left them there to die, we took them out and handed them over to the relevant special services," said the commander of the Russian paratrooper assault battalion with the call sign Master.
Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry said that within two weeks the Russian army had liberated the settlements of Alexandria, Leonidovo, Russkoe Porechnoye and Kruglenkoe in Kursk Region.
On January 16, the North military grouping destroyed an AFU BMP with a paratrooper in the border area of Kursk Region using a Lancet barrage munition.
The AFU attacked Russian positions in the border areas of the Kursk region on August 6, 2024. The situation in the region was recognized as a state of emergency of federal character. The liquidation of the Ukrainian militants who invaded the Russian territory is underway.
The special operation to protect Donbass, the beginning of which was announced by the President of the Russian Federation on February 24, 2022, continues. The decision was taken against the background of the worsening situation in the region.
